Brandy Norwood

Brandy Rayana Norwood, better known simply as Brandy, has been a defining voice in contemporary R&B and pop music since the early 1990s. Born on February 11, 1979, in McComb, Mississippi, Brandy’s journey from a child performer to an award-winning singer, actress, and producer is nothing short of remarkable.

Brandy grew up as part of a musical family—her father Willie Norwood was a minister who played the guitar and piano, while her mother Sonja Norwood sang in church choirs. She had siblings Ray J (real name: Romeo Raynard Norwood) and Mercedes Moné Norwood. The young Brandy began performing at age five, showcasing her vocal talents on local television shows.

Her career took off with the release of her self-titled debut album in 1994. Hits like ‘I Wanna Be Down’ and ‘Almost Doesn’t Count’ established her as a leading figure among teen pop stars. In 2007, Brandy married Romeo Austin, a former member of the R&B group Immature. They welcomed their daughter Sy’rai Smith in 2014 and divorced in 2023.
