Ayrton Senna

Brazil

Ayrton Senna da Silva, born in São Paulo in 1960, won three Formula One World Championships in 1988, 1990, and 1991. His dominance in wet-weather races and fierce rivalry with Alain Prost defined his career. At his death he held a record 65 pole positions. He died in a crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, a tragedy that spurred major safety reforms. In a 2010 poll, over 200 fellow drivers voted him the greatest Formula One driver of all time.
