Hanns Eisler
Germany
Hanns Eisler wrote the national anthem of East Germany, 'Auferstanden aus Ruinen, and was deported from the United States in 1947 after testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee. A composer and lyricist, he collaborated with Bertolt Brecht on multiple works and created scores for Hollywood films including 'Hangmen Also Die!. Tensions with East German authorities arose over his avant-garde music, despite his official recognition with the National Prize of East Germany.
