Max von Sydow earned his first Oscar nomination for playing Lasse Karlsson in Bille August's Pelle the Conqueror 1987. He is the only male Swedish actor to receive an Academy Award nomination. His second nomination came at age 82 for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close 2011. Von Sydow also played chess with Death in Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal 1957 and portrayed Father Merrin in The Exorcist 1973.
