Johannes V. Jensen received the 1944 Nobel Prize in Literature for his six-volume series The Long Journey. He was born in 1873 in Farsø, Denmark, and studied medicine before dropping out to travel and write. His novel Hummerland Stories brought him early acclaim, and he later translated Shakespeare and introduced American authors to Denmark. Jensen died in Copenhagen in 1950 at age 77.
