On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to summit Mount Everest. Hillary worked as a beekeeper, served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India from 1985 to 1988, and received the Order of the Garter. He died in 2008 at age 88.
