Burgess Meredith

Burgess Meredith, born Oliver Burgess Meredith on November 16, 1907, was an American actor and director whose career spanned more than six decades. He achieved widespread acclaim for his versatile acting skills and behind-the-scenes work in the film industry.

Meredith was born in Toronto to William George Meredith and Ida Beth Meredith. His family relocated to New York City when he was a child, where he developed an early interest in theater and literature. After graduating from Amherst College, Meredith began his career as a journalist before transitioning into acting.

His journey to prominence started with small roles on Broadway in the 1930s. By the late 1940s, Meredith had become well-known for his performances in films such as The Adventures of Robin Hood. In the following decades, he continued to work consistently, appearing in over a hundred movies and television shows.

Meredith’s personal life was marked by significant relationships and marriages. He married three times: first to actress Paulette Goddard, then Margaret Perry, and finally Kaja Sundsten. Throughout his career, Meredith also directed several successful stage productions and won a Tony Award for Best Play Direction in 1963.

His health began declining in the late 1980s due to melanoma, which ultimately led to his death on September 9, 1997. Despite his struggles with illness, Meredith continued to work up until a few years before his passing, leaving behind a rich legacy of artistic contributions and memorable performances.
