Who is Bernie Sanders?

BIOGRAPHY

Bernie Sanders — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

In 1963, Bernie Sanders was arrested for resisting arrest during a protest against segregated Chicago schools. Bernard Sanders was born on September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Dorothy and Elias Sanders. His father, Elias, was a Polish Jewish immigrant who changed his surname from Gutman upon becoming a US citizen in 1927. He attended James Madison High School, captain of the track team, then spent a year at Brooklyn College before transferring to the University of Chicago. There he earned a BA in Political Science and became involved in civil rights activism.

Career

Sanders’s political career began locally: he was elected Mayor of Burlington, Vermont, in 1981 and served until 1989. He then served as Vermont’s sole US Representative from 1991 to 2007 as an independent. In 2007, he became a US Senator, the longest-serving independent in congressional history. His 2016 run for the Democratic presidential nomination brought national attention: he won 23 primaries and 43% of the vote, losing to Hillary Clinton. He sought the nomination again in 2020, launching his campaign in February 2019. He has also acted, appearing in films like My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception 1999 and The New Corporation: The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel 2020.

Personal life

Sanders has been married to Jane Sanders since May 28, 1988. He was previously married to Deborah Shiling from 1964 to 1966. He has one biological son, Levi Sanders born 1969, from a relationship with Susan Campbell Mott, and three stepchildren through Jane. His older brother, Larry Sanders, who lives in England, was the Health Spokesperson for the Green Party of England and Wales in 2016. The original family surname was Gutman; his father changed it to Sanders upon becoming a US citizen.

Legacy

Bernie Sanders popularized the term Democratic Socialist in American politics and inspired a generation of progressive activists. His 2016 campaign, which won 23 primaries and 13 million votes, pushed the Democratic Party leftward on issues like universal healthcare and tuition-free college. He is the first non-Christian to win a major party presidential primary and the longest-serving independent Senator. His influence is seen in the rise of progressive politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He is most remembered as a steadfast independent voice for economic justice and his transformative presidential campaigns.
