Michelle Obama

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (born January 17, 1964) has become a defining figure in American politics and civil society. The former First Lady of the United States is celebrated for her advocacy work on education, military families, and community service.

Michelle was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Fraser Robinson III and Marian Shields Robinson. Her family faced financial struggles but instilled strong values in Michelle from an early age. She excelled academically at Princeton University, where she graduated with a degree in sociology and Afro-American studies. Following her undergraduate success, Michelle attended Harvard Law School.

After law school, Michelle joined the prestigious Chicago firm Sidley Austin LLP as a summer associate alongside Barack Obama, who would become her husband. She transitioned to public service roles within the City of Chicago and later at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Her work included initiatives like the development of the South Shore Health Clinic.

Michelle’s career ascended with Barack’s political rise. As First Lady from 2009 to 2017, she spearheaded several initiatives, most notably ‘Let’s Move!’ which aimed to combat childhood obesity and improve nutrition for children across America. She also launched ‘Joining Forces,’ an initiative that supported military families.

On the personal front, Michelle married Barack Obama in 1992, and they have two daughters: Malia Ann Obama and Sasha Obama. The family’s time at the White House was marked by their commitment to community engagement and inclusivity.

Much of Michelle’s legacy is defined by her public service work and advocacy roles after leaving the White House. She authored a best-selling memoir, Becoming, in 2018 which detailed her journey from Chicago to the world stage. Additionally, she established the Obama Foundation and has continued to speak on global issues of education, equality, and health.
