Jürgens grew up in a modest family environment. His father, Rudolf Bockelmann, was an upholsterer, while his mother, Käthe Bockelmann, worked as a seamstress. The young Jürgen showed early promise in music, learning to play the piano and developing a passion for songwriting at a young age.
His rise to prominence began in earnest when he entered the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 with his composition Viel zu spät. Although Austria did not win that year, Jürgens went on to participate multiple times and eventually won the contest in 1966 for Switzerland with the song Mercure est cry (Mercury Is Cry), solidifying his international fame. Over the years, he continued to release successful albums and singles, becoming one of Austria’s most beloved cultural icons.
Jürgens’ personal life was marked by several marriages and a large family. He married Panja Jürgens in 1956 and had four children: John, Jenny, Gloria Burda, and Sonja. In 1974, he wed Corinna Jürgens, with whom he had three more children. Throughout his life, Jürgens also maintained relationships with Sabrina Burda and Michaela Moritz.
Udo Jürgens passed away on December 21, 2014, due to heart failure at the age of 80 in Vienna. His legacy continues through his extensive discography and influence on contemporary Austrian music.
