Chuck Norris, born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, is an American actor, writer, screenwriter, film producer, stunt performer, and martial artist. A figure synonymous with action cinema and television, Norrisโs life story is one of perseverance and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Norris was born in Ryan, Oklahoma, to Ray Norris, a railroad worker, and Wilma Scarberry. His family moved frequently during his early years due to the demands of his father’s job. This nomadic upbringing instilled in Norris a sense of resilience that would later serve him well in both martial arts and acting.
The turning point in Norrisโs life came when he met Taky Kimura, who introduced him to karate at age 16. His dedication to the sport led him to win numerous tournaments and eventually earn his first-degree black belt by 1958. After graduating from high school, Norris enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served for six years and continued to hone his martial arts skills.
Upon leaving military service, Norris relocated to California to pursue a career as a professional karate instructor. His reputation grew when he opened a dojo alongside Tatsuo Yamada and Bill O’Neill, and he began teaching celebrities such as Sonny Bono and Frank Sinatra. Norris’s film debut came in 1970 with The Wrecking Crew, but it was his role in Bruce Leeโs Way of the Dragon (1972) that brought him national attention. His breakthrough as a leading man came in Breaker! Breaker! and Lone Wolf McQuade, establishing him as an action hero. However, it was his portrayal of Walker, Texas Ranger in the TV series (1995-2001) that made him a household name.
