Jean Paul Belmondo appeared on cinema screens as the amoral Michel Poiccard in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless 1960, a performance that defined the French New Wave. Over six decades, he featured in over 80 films, from art-house Pierrot le Fou 1965 to commercial hits like The Professional 1981. He performed his own stunts until a 1985 accident, earned a César Award for Best Actor in 1989, and was awarded the Legion of Honour. Belmondo died on September 6, 2021 in Paris at age 88.
