United Kingdom Who is Franz Liszt?
Franz Liszt (October 22, 1811 – July 31, 1886) was one of the most influential composers and virtuoso pianists in history. Born in Raiding, Hungary, to Adam and Anna Liszt, Franz’s early years were marked by a precocious talent for music that his father recognized and nurtured.
At the age of nine, Franz Liszt gave his first public concert in Vienna, where he was praised as a child prodigy. His formal education included studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, but much of his musical development came from private lessons with renowned musicians like Carl Czerny.
By his early twenties, Franz Liszt had established himself in Parisian society through his performances and compositions. He was a prolific composer known for works such as Piano Sonata in B minor, Symphonic Poems, and the Liszt Piano Transcriptions. In 1847, he abandoned his concert career to focus on composition and teaching.
His personal life was filled with passionate affairs. He lived for many years with Marie d’Agoult, a married woman who bore him three children, including Cosima Wagner. Later in his life, Liszt became involved with Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, whose influence on his later works and career is notable.
Liszt’s legacy includes not only his compositions but also his role as a teacher to many of the leading musicians of his time. He died from pneumonia in Bayreuth, Germany, on July 31, 1886, leaving behind an unparalleled impact on Romantic music and piano technique.
