United Kingdom Who is Aleister Crowley?
Aleister Crowley, born Edward Alexander Crowley on October 12, 1875, in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, was one of the most enigmatic figures of the twentieth century. A prolific writer and a self-proclaimed prophet of a new age, he left an indelible mark on Western occultism.
Crowley came from a wealthy family with deep roots in the Church of England. His father, Edward Crowley, was a fervent Christian who expected his son to follow in his footsteps, leading to a tumultuous relationship between them. As a child, he attended several schools, including Eastbourne College and Malvern College, where he developed an early interest in literature and philosophy.
His journey to prominence began when he joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an esoteric society practicing ceremonial magic. He quickly rose through its ranks due to his intellect and charisma, eventually becoming a high-ranking member. In 1900, Crowley’s life changed dramatically after joining the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), where he met Rose Edith Kelly, who would become his wife in 1903.
Crowley’s career was marked by a series of controversial acts and writings. He was expelled from the Golden Dawn for his aggressive tactics and unconventional beliefs. In 1904, he published The Book of the Law, which he claimed to have received through divine revelation, and founded the Aeon of Horus, an era in which humanity would be guided by a godhead rather than traditional religion.
His personal life was as tumultuous as his career. He had one child, Randall Gair Doherty, born out of wedlock to a woman named Marjorie Eliot in 1930. Crowley and Kelly divorced in 1924 after years of estrangement. In later years, he lived with an unmarried partner, Greta Valentine.
Crowley’s legacy remains contentious; while some view him as a charlatan and a fraud, others see him as a visionary who challenged the boundaries of traditional religion and spirituality. He died on December 1, 1947, in Hastings, Sussex, from bronchitis at the age of 72.
