Early life

Pauline Viardot was born on July 18, 1821 in Paris into a family of Spanish performers. Her father was the tenor Manuel García and her mother Joaquina Sitchez. Her older sister was the opera singer Maria Malibran.

Pauline’s life took an abrupt turn when Maria died suddenly in 1836, forcing the 15-year-old into the spotlight. She trained intensively and soon was hailed as an opera singer par excellence. She studied alongside Franz Liszt and the poet Ivan Turgenev taught her Russian, becoming her lifelong admirer.

Career

Viardot’s career took off in the 1840s. In 1843, her good friend George Sand wrote her into the novel Consuelo as its heroine, cementing her cultural influence. She gained renown as an opera singer and composer of skill.

Her studies with Franz Liszt and her close relationship with Ivan Turgenev shaped her artistic life. In 1863, she retired from the stage to nurse both her husband and Turgenev, who both died in 1883.

Personal life

Pauline Viardot married author and director Louis Viardot in 1840. They had four children, including Paul Viardot and Louise Héritte Viardot, though some or all may have been fathered by Ivan Turgenev. Turgenev, who taught her Russian, remained devoted to her all his life.

Her close friend was novelist George Sand, who immortalized her in Consuelo. Viardot spent her later years nursing both her husband and Turgenev until their deaths in 1883. She died peacefully in 1910 at age 88.
