Gerard Reve 1923–2006 was a Dutch writer and one of the Great Three of postwar Dutch literature. Paul Verhoeven adapted his novel The Fourth Man into a 1983 film. Reve was one of the first openly gay authors in the Netherlands, writing openly about homosexuality. His 1966 blasphemy trial, the Donkey Trial, ended in acquittal and led to the repeal of blasphemy laws in 2013. He died of Alzheimer's disease in Belgium in 2006.
