United States Who is Walt Disney?
Walter Elias “Walt” Disney (December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) is one of the most influential figures in American entertainment history. His legacy spans from the creation of beloved animated classics to the establishment of Disneyland and Disney World.
Disney was born in Chicago but grew up on a farm near Marceline, Missouri. His father, Elias Disney, instilled a strong work ethic, while his mother, Flora Call Disney, nurtured Walt’s creativity. As a young boy, he developed an interest in drawing and cartooning, which later became the foundation of his career.
Disney moved to Kansas City in 1917 where he worked for several animation studios before founding Laugh-O-Gram Studio at age nineteen. After its failure, Disney relocated to Hollywood with little more than a suitcase full of ambition. His first big break came when he created the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit for Universal Pictures; however, this contract did not include rights to his intellectual property.
With his brother Roy O. Disney, Walt founded The Walt Disney Studio in 1923 and produced the first fully synchronized sound cartoon with “Steamboat Willie,” which introduced Mickey Mouse in November 1928. This character would go on to become an international sensation and the mascot for the entire company.
Throughout his career, Disney won numerous awards including multiple Academy Awards, a special merit award from the Golden Globe Association, and a Congressional Gold Medal among others. He was also instrumental in developing new technologies such as multiplane cameras and pioneering methods of cel animation.
In 1955, he opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which became an instant success and inspired the creation of Disney World and other theme parks around the globe. His influence extended beyond entertainment into television production with shows like The Mickey Mouse Club and documentary series about nature.
Walt’s personal life was marked by his marriage to Lillian Bounds in 1925, who became a constant support throughout his career. They had two daughters: Diane Marie Disney (born 1933) and Sharon Mae Disney (adopted 1955).
On December 15, 1966, Walt died from lung cancer in Los Angeles at the age of 65. Yet his legacy lives on through a vast portfolio that includes films, theme parks, cruise lines, and more than 200 Disney stores worldwide.
