Early life

At age five, Robert Downey Jr. made his screen debut in Pound 1970, directed by his father Robert Downey Sr., a filmmaker. His father introduced him to marijuana at age eight, an event that foreshadowed struggles with addiction. Born on April 4, 1965 in Manhattan, New York City, he was the son of actress Elsie Downey. He attended Santa Monica High School but dropped out at 17 to pursue acting full-time in New York, working as a busboy and even performing as living art in a SoHo nightclub.

Career

Downey Jr. made his film debut at age five in Pound 1970. His breakthrough came with the title role in Chaplin 1992, earning him a BAFTA Award and an Academy Award nomination. After drug-related arrests derailed his career in the late 1990s, he got clean in 2003. He then played Harry Lockhart in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang 2005, a role that revived his career. In 2008, he secured the part of Tony Stark in Iron Man, launching a decade-long run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also played Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s films, winning a Golden Globe. He topped Forbes’ list of highest-paid actors from 2012 to 2015. In 2023, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer.

Personal life

Downey married Deborah Falconer in 1992 after dating only 42 days; they had one son, Indio Falconer Downey, before divorcing in 2004. He met Susan Downey on the set of Gothika 2003 and proposed on her 30th birthday; they married in 2005 and have two children, Exton Elias and Avri Roel. He lived with actress Sarah Jessica Parker from 1984 to 1991 and was roommates with Kiefer Sutherland in the early 1980s.

Legacy

Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark transformed comic book movies into blockbusters, with his films grossing billions. His comeback from addiction to Oscar winner is considered one of Hollywood’s great stories. In 2008, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people. He placed his handprints at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in 2010 and has won three Golden Globes and an Academy Award.
