On July 8, 2022, a lone gunman killed Shinzo Abe with a homemade shotgun while he gave a speech in Kashihara, Nara. Abe, Japan's 90th and 96th prime minister, served two non-consecutive terms totaling nearly nine years. Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in 2014.
