Early life

The son of a blacklisted director and an actress, Sean Justin Penn was born in Santa Monica, California on August 17, 1960. His father, Leo Penn, was a director and actor blacklisted in the 1950s for his political beliefs; his mother, Eileen Ryan, was an actress. Growing up in Los Angeles, he attended Santa Monica High School and later Santa Monica College. His brother Chris Penn also became an actor. His paternal grandparents were Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from Russia and Lithuania, and his mother is half Italian and half Irish.

Career

Sean Penn’s breakout came in 1982 as Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. In The Falcon and the Snowman 1985, he acted alongside Timothy Hutton. He earned his first Oscar nomination for Dead Man Walking 1995 and won his first Best Actor Oscar for Mystic River 2003. His second Oscar came for Milk 2008. Penn also directed, with films like The Indian Runner 1991 and Into the Wild 2007, which earned Hal Holbrook an Oscar nomination.

Personal life

Sean Penn married three times. He married Madonna in 1985; they divorced in 1989. He married Robin Wright in 1996 after meeting on the set of State of Grace 1990; they had two children, Dylan born 1991 and Hopper born 1993, and divorced in 2010. In 2020 he married Leila George; they divorced in 2022. Penn served 32 days in jail in 1987 for hitting an extra, and in 2016 he interviewed drug lord El Chapo for Rolling Stone, a move that drew controversy.

Legacy

Sean Penn is one of four actors to win acting prizes at Venice, Cannes, and Berlin film festivals, in addition to two Oscars. His performance as Jeff Spicoli is ranked #9 on Premiere’s 100 Greatest Movie Characters. In 2004, he received the John Steinbeck Award in San Francisco, presented by Bruce Springsteen. Penn founded CORE, a disaster relief organization, and is remembered for his intense performances and outspoken political views.
