Brazil Who is Pelé?
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé or O Rei, was a Brazilian soccer player whose influence transcended sports to become a cultural icon. Born on October 23, 1940, in Três Corações, Brazil, Pelé’s journey from the favelas of Bauru to global fame is a testament to his extraordinary talent and hard work.
Pelé grew up in poverty with his parents, Celeste Arantes and Dondinho. His father, an amateur soccer player, instilled in him a love for the sport. Despite early financial struggles, Pelé’s natural ability was recognized when he joined Santos FC at age 15. In 1958, just shy of his 17th birthday, he made history by scoring three goals against Sweden and one against France in the FIFA World Cup finals.
Over the next two decades, Pelé’s career with Santos FC saw him set numerous records and achieve remarkable feats. He was instrumental in Brazil winning the World Cup twice more—in 1962 and 1970—solidifying his status as a national hero. By retiring from international play after the 1970 World Cup, Pelé had scored an incredible 1,283 goals in 1,363 matches for club and country.
Off the field, Pelé’s life was marked by personal milestones alongside his sporting achievements. He married three times: first to Rosemeri dos Reis Cholbi with whom he had two children, Edson Cholbi Nascimento and Sandra Regina Machado; secondly to Assíria Nascimento, who bore him a son named Arthur; and finally to Marcia Aoki. Pelé also maintained a relationship with Xuxa, one of Brazil’s most famous television personalities.
After retiring from professional play in 1977, Pelé remained active as an ambassador for the sport, participating in ceremonial matches and political roles where he advocated for peace and social justice. His legacy is cemented not only by his athletic prowess but also by his humanitarian efforts and his role in spreading Brazilian culture worldwide.
Pelé passed away on December 29, 2022, at the age of 82 after a battle with colorectal cancer. His death marked the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of soccer players and fans alike.
