Born in Veracruz, Mexico, on February 17, 1948, José grew up amidst a family environment that encouraged creativity and artistic expression. His father, José Sosa Esquivel, was a radio announcer who nurtured the young boy’s passion for music.

He began performing as José Alfredo Jiménez, a persona he used to avoid conflict with a record label over contractual disputes.
