Who was John Betjeman?

BIOGRAPHY

John Betjeman — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

John Betjeman’s childhood during World War I was shaped by the bullying he endured for his German surname Betjemann. He was born on 28 August 1906 in Hampstead, London, to Mabel Bessie Dawson and Ernest Edward Betjemann. The family’s surname led to harassment at school, prompting him to change the spelling from Betjemann to Betjeman. He attended Byron House School, Dragon School, Highgate School, and Marlborough College before studying at Magdalen College, Oxford.

Career

Betjeman’s television work includes appearances on the satirical show That Was the Week That Was in 1962, the documentary Londoners in 1965, and But Seriously, It’s Sheila Hancock in 1972. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1972, a role he held until his death in 1984. Despite his public success, Betjeman privately regretted accepting the laureateship, once asking his friend Philip Larkin if he would take over. He received several major awards: the Heinemann Award, the Russell Loines Award for Poetry, the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry, the Albert Medal, the CBE in 1960, and a knighthood in 1969.

Personal life

Betjeman married Penelope Chetwode on 29 July 1933. They had two children: son Paul born in 1937 and daughter Candida born in 1942. The couple separated after Penelope converted to Roman Catholicism in the 1950s, but they never divorced. He later formed a lifelong romantic friendship with Lady Elizabeth Cavendish, whom he met in 1951. He spent much of his time at his second home in Trebetherick, Cornwall, often accompanied by Cavendish.

Legacy

As Poet Laureate from 1972 to 1984, John Betjeman’s accessible poetry and television appearances brought his work to a wide audience. He inspired writers like Philip Larkin, a friend. His poetry collections remain in print, and his former home in Cornwall attracts visitors. His honors include the CBE in 1960, knighthood in 1969, and the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 1961.
