Akira Kurosawa's international breakthrough came with Rashomon in 1950, winning the Golden Lion at Venice. He directed Seven Samurai 1954, Yojimbo 1961, and Ran 1985, and his films influenced directors worldwide. Despite financial difficulties in the 1970s, he continued creating until his death in 1998.
