Who is Andrew Mountbatten Windsor?

BIOGRAPHY

Andrew Mountbatten Windsor — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II gave birth to her second son, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, in Westminster, London. He attended Gordonstoun in Scotland, Lakefield College School in Canada, and later the Britannia Royal Naval College. His royal upbringing prepared him for a military career, but his path was shaped by his mother’s reign and his brother Charles’s status as heir.

Career

Andrew’s naval career began at the Britannia Royal Naval College in 1979. He saw active duty as a helicopter pilot during the Falklands War in 1982, serving on HMS Invincible. In 1986, he was created Duke of York upon his marriage to Sarah Ferguson. He later served as a trade ambassador from 2001 to 2011, but his public role ended after the Epstein scandal in 2020.

Personal life

Andrew married Sarah Ferguson on 23 July 1986 at Westminster Abbey. They had two daughters: Princess Beatrice born 1988 and Princess Eugenie born 1990. They separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996, but remained on good terms. Andrew’s friendships with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell led to controversy, including accusations that he was sex-trafficked with Epstein.

Legacy

Andrew’s legacy is overshadowed by the Epstein scandal and the unprecedented removal of his royal titles in 2025. He was the first child born to a reigning monarch in over 100 years. Despite his military service in the Falklands War, his reputation is now defined by the civil lawsuit settlement in 2022 and his estrangement from public life.

A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
