Juan Gelman

Juan Gelman won the Miguel de Cervantes Prize in 2007. He wrote over 20 poetry books translated into 14 languages. Born in Buenos Aires in 1930 to Jewish Ukrainian immigrants, he is a major figure in Spanish literature. During Argentina's military dictatorship, his son and daughter-in-law were abducted. Gelman searched for them for decades and discovered his granddaughter in 2000. His personal tragedy and activism turned him into an international human rights symbol.
