Gene Kelly acted, danced, and directed, transforming movie musicals through athletic dance and inventive choreography. Singin' in the Rain 1952 and An American in Paris 1951 — which he starred in and choreographed — both sit in the National Film Registry. He received an Academy Honorary Award in 1952 and Kennedy Center Honors in 1982. He died February 2, 1996 at age 83.
