Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Rio de Janeiro’s musical culture shaped Antonio Carlos Jobim from an early age. He was born on 25 January 1927 to Jorge de Oliveira Jobim and was a cousin of journalist and football manager João Saldanha. Immersion in samba and classical music provided the foundation for his future career.

In 1962, Jobim co-wrote The Girl from Ipanema originally Garota de Ipanema with poet Vinicius de Moraes, inspired by Helô Pinheiro passing by Ipanema Beach. The song became a global standard. He collaborated with Frank Sinatra on two albums of duets, including the 1967 TV special Frank Sinatra: a Man and His Music + Ella + Jobim. Jobim’s music appeared in films such as Lost Highway 1997, Deep Rising 1998, and V for Vendetta 2005. He won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1991.

Jobim was married twice: first to Thereza de Otero Hermanny from 1948 to 1977, with whom he had children Paulo Jobim born 1950 and Elizabeth Jobim born 1957. After divorcing Thereza, he married Ana Beatriz Lontra Jobim in 1977, remaining with her until his death. With Ana, he had two more children: João Francisco born 1979 died 1998 and Maria Luíza Helena born 1987. He was also the father of composer Paulo Jobim and grandfather of Daniel Jobim.

Jobim’s work helped define bossa nova. His song The Girl from Ipanema became one of the most recorded songs in history. He received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Order of Cultural Merit from Brazil, and was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame multiple times. He died on 8 December 1994 in New York City after surgery.
