Who was Eddie Guerrero?

BIOGRAPHY

Eddie Guerrero — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Gory Guerrero, Eddie’s father, was a star in the U.S., an icon in Texas, and a legend in Mexico. Eddie, the youngest of six children, was born on October 9, 1967, in El Paso, Texas. Three of his brothers—Mando, Héctor, and Chavo Sr.—also became wrestlers, though only Chavo Sr. found major success. Eddie attended Jefferson High School before studying at the University of New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands University.

The age difference with his brothers, at least ten years, made him feel like a third-generation wrestler, inheriting feuds from both his father and brothers. He began his wrestling career in 1989.

Career

Eddie Guerrero first gained widespread attention in ECW, where he won the ECW Television Championship by defeating Dean Malenko in 1995. He soon moved to WCW, capturing the WCW Cruiserweight Championship by beating Chris Jericho. In WCW, he formed the Latino World Order stable with Rey Mysterio Jr., La Parka, Psychosis, and Juventud Guerrera.

In 2000, Guerrero debuted in WWE as part of the Radicalz alongside Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, and Perry Saturn. He later formed a tag team with his nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr. called Los Guerreros, winning the WWE Tag Team Championship by defeating Team Angle on SmackDown!

At No Way Out 2004, Guerrero reached his career peak by defeating Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Championship. He defended the title against Kurt Angle at WrestleMania XX, becoming the second Hispanic WWE Champion after Pedro Morales. He lost the title to John Bradshaw Layfield at The Great American Bash 2004 in a Texas Bull Rope Match.

In 2005, he teamed with Rey Mysterio to win the WWE Tag Team Championship at No Way Out. His final match was against Mr. Kennedy on SmackDown! in November 2005.

Personal life

Eddie Guerrero married Vickie Guerrero on April 24, 1990, and they had three daughters: Shaul born 1990, Sherilyn born 1996, and Kaylie Marie born 2002. One of his daughters, Raquel Diaz, also entered the wrestling business.

Substance abuse fueled a near-fatal car crash in early 1999 that threw him 100 feet from his vehicle and caused serious pelvic injuries. He is the uncle of Chavo Guerrero Jr., who was only three years younger, and cousin of Mexican wrestlers Enrique Llanes and Javier Llanes.

Legacy

Posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame, and the AAA Hall of Fame, Guerrero is remembered for his technical skill and charisma. TNA Wrestling aired a tribute graphic after his death in 2005, and wrestlers honored him with signs and wristbands. His catchphrase I lie, I cheat, I steal became a hallmark, and his legacy continues through his nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr. and his daughter Raquel, who both wrestled. He is remembered for his in-ring work, Latino Heat persona, and 2004 WWE Championship win.
