Who is Fernando Alonso?

BIOGRAPHY

Fernando Alonso — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Alonso Díaz was born on July 29, 1981 in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain to José Luis Alonso. He grew up with his sister Lorena. His father supported his early racing ambitions, and Alonso made his Formula One debut in 2001 with Minardi. Despite the uncompetitive car, he impressed by finishing 11th at the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

Career

Alonso took his first pole position at the 2003 Malaysian Grand Prix and became the then-youngest grand prix winner at the 2003 Hungarian Grand Prix. His move to Renault in 2005 armed him with the R25, and he won seven races that season, securing his first World Championship in Brazil. He retained his title in 2006 with another seven victories, becoming the then-youngest double world champion.

In 2007, Alonso joined McLaren and won four races, but his campaign was overshadowed by team friction and he finished third in the championship. He returned to Renault for two lean years before joining Ferrari in 2010, winning his first race for the team at the Bahrain Grand Prix. He lost the 2010 and 2012 titles on the final race due to strategic errors. After a second stint at McLaren from 2015 to 2018 without success, he took a two-year sabbatical and returned with Alpine in 2021, scoring his first podium in seven years at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix. He moved to Aston Martin in 2023, where he scored six podiums in the first eight races and achieved his 100th podium at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Personal life

Alonso married Raquel del Rosario, lead singer of El Sueño de Morfeo, in 2006. The marriage ended in 2011. He later married Melissa Jiménez. He has had relationships with Xenia Tchoumitcheva, Dasha Kapustina, and Lara Álvarez. Alonso serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and runs an esports and junior racing team.

Legacy

Alonso is often praised for his tactical brilliance and relentless pace. He was inducted into the FIA Hall of Fame twice. He is the only Spanish driver to win the Formula One World Championship and held the record for youngest back-to-back champion until Sebastian Vettel in 2011. His 2012 season with Ferrari, where he won three races in an uncompetitive car, is frequently cited as his finest. Alonso’s legacy rests on his ability to extract maximum performance from any machinery and his enduring popularity among fans.
