Early life

Eugene Allen Hackman was born in San Bernardino, California, on January 30, 1930. His father Eugene Ezra Hackman operated a newspaper printing press, and his mother Ann Lydia Elizabeth Gray was of Pennsylvania Dutch and Canadian descent. After his parents divorced when he was about 14, Hackman moved frequently and eventually settled in Danville, Illinois. He left home at 16 to join the US Marines, lying about his age.

After his discharge, Hackman used the G.I. Bill to study journalism and television production at the University of Illinois. He later enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse to study acting, where he and classmate Dustin Hoffman were voted Least likely to succeed.

Career

Hackman’s first major film role was as Buck Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde 1967, earning him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Detective Jimmy Popeye Doyle in The French Connection 1971. In 1974, he starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation and played a blind man in Young Frankenstein.

He played Lex Luthor in Superman 1978 and later won a second Oscar for Unforgiven 1992 as Sheriff Little Bill Daggett. Hackman continued acting into the 2000s, with notable roles in The Firm 1993, Crimson Tide 1995, and The Royal Tenenbaums 2001. He retired after his final film Welcome to Mooseport 2004.

Personal life

Hackman married Betsy Arakawa in December 1991; they remained together until his death in 2025. He had three children—Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie—from his first marriage to Faye Maltese 1956–1986. Hackman was intensely private about his personal life, rarely mentioning it in interviews.
