BIOGRAPHY

Joe Laurinaitis — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Joseph Michael Laurinaitis arrived on September 12, 1960 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended Irondale High School. The 1981 Mel Gibson movie The Road Warrior inspired his tag team’s name and look. He started training in a basement gym with a ring shoved against a brick wall; the rough conditions chipped bone in his elbow.

Career

In the early 1980s, Laurinaitis and Mike Hegstrand, as Road Warrior Hawk, formed The Road Warriors. They won the AWA World Tag Team Championship in 1984, then the NWA and WWF tag titles, becoming the first team to hold all three. They headlined multiple pay-per-views for WWF and WCW, including a challenge for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at Sin in 2001. After Hawk died, Animal teamed with Heidenreich to win the WWE Tag Team Championship on SmackDown in 2005.

Personal life

Laurinaitis married Kim Turman and later Julia Laurinaitis. He had a son James, who played linebacker at Ohio State and captained the New Orleans Saints, and a daughter Jessica. Brothers John, known as Johnny Ace, and Marcus Laurinaitis also worked in wrestling.

Legacy

The Road Warriors are among the top tag teams in wrestling history. The WWE Hall of Fame inducted Animal and Hawk in 2011, as did the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame. The Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame honored them in 2011, and the NWA Hall of Fame in 2012. As the first team to win the tag team Triple Crown, they inspired later wrestlers. Animal’s 2011 autobiography The Road Warriors: Danger, Death, and the Rush of Wrestling gives a behind-the-scenes look at their career.
