On January 24, 1949, John Belushi was born in Chicago to Albanian immigrant parents. His father Adam owned a restaurant; the family moved to Wheaton when he was six. In high school, he served as co-captain of the football team and was voted homecoming king. A drama teacher introduced him to acting, and he performed summer stock in Indiana in 1967. At College of DuPage, he co-founded the West Compass Players improv troupe.
Belushi joined Second City in Chicago in 1971, developing his gonzo physical comedy. He moved to New York in 1972 for National Lampoon’s Lemmings. In 1975, he became a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Two years later, in 1978, he played Bluto in Animal House, the year’s top-grossing comedy.
