BIOGRAPHY

Kelly Clarkson — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Kelly Brianne Clarkson was born on April 24, 1982 in Fort Worth, Texas, and raised in Burleson, Texas. Her parents, Jeanne Ann Taylor and Stephen Michael Clarkson, divorced when she was six. She dreamed of becoming a marine biologist until she saw the film Jaws 1975 and changed her mind. After graduating from Burleson High School in 2000, she worked a variety of jobs including cocktail waitress at a comedy club, at a bookstore, and at a zoo. She was offered scholarships to three universities but decided to pursue a music career instead.

Career

Kelly Clarkson won the first season of American Idol on September 4, 2002, beating out over 10,000 contestants for a $1 million recording contract. Her debut single A Moment Like This set a Billboard Hot 100 record by leaping from number 52 to number 1. Her debut album Thankful 2003 sold over 2.5 million copies and went double platinum. Her sophomore album Breakaway 2004 sold over 6.2 million copies in the United States and nearly 25 million worldwide. At the 2006 Grammy Awards, she won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Since U Been Gone and Best Pop Vocal Album for Breakaway. She continued to release hit albums and singles, and in 2019 she launched The Kelly Clarkson Show, which won multiple Daytime Emmy Awards. In 2022, she received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal life

Kelly Clarkson married Brandon Blackstock, son of her manager Narvel Blackstock and stepson of Reba McEntire, on October 20, 2013 at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee. They had two children: daughter River Rose Blackstock born June 12, 2014, and son Remington Alexander Remy Blackstock born April 12, 2016. She also became stepmother to Brandon’s two children from a previous relationship. She filed for divorce on June 11, 2020. She underwent LASIK eye surgery and had her appendix removed in May 2019. She has influenced a generation of pop and country artists and continues to be a prominent television host. She is most remembered for her powerful voice, her string of hit songs, and her authentic personality.

Especially Jagged Little Pill. the Last Song on My December, Irvine, It Literally Was the Lowest Point I’ve Had in My Life. I Wrote It After My Irvine Show on My Last Tour. I Was Just so Burned-out. I Was Really Struggling at Getting Somebody Out of My Life and Finding People That Really Cared. the Whole Song Is a Prayer. I Wrote It in the Bathroom of the Venue After the Show. I Had to Cancel My Meet-and-greet; It’s the Only Meet-and-greet I’ve Ever Canceled. I Couldn’t Smile. It Was Just a Really, Really Bad Night.
