Who is LeBron James?

BIOGRAPHY

LeBron James — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

LeBron James was born in Akron, Ohio, on December 30, 1984, to Gloria James and Anthony McClelland. He grew up in a challenging environment, moving frequently with his mother. At St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, his basketball talent attracted national attention, with games televised on ESPN2 and NBA stars like Shaquille O’Neal in attendance. His mother used his future earning potential to buy him a Hummer H2 for his 18th birthday, which led to an OHSAA investigation and a two-game suspension.

Career

LeBron James was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. In 2010, he joined the Miami Heat, forming the Big Three with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, winning two NBA championships in 2012 and 2013. He returned to Cleveland in 2014 and led the Cavaliers to a historic NBA Finals comeback in 2016, winning his third title and Finals MVP. In 2018, he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning his fourth NBA championship in 2020. He also produced and starred in films such as Space Jam: A New Legacy 2021 and Trainwreck 2015. Off the court, he founded SpringHill Company, named after the SpringHill Suites complex where he grew up.

Personal life

LeBron James married his high school sweetheart, Savannah Brinson, on September 14, 2013. They have three children: sons Bronny born October 6, 2004 and Bryce born June 14, 2007, and daughter Zhuri born October 22, 2014. LeBron and Bronny made NBA history in July 2024 as the first father-son duo to play for the same team, the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2015, he purchased a home in Brentwood, California for nearly $21 million, and previously owned a $17 million home in Miami.

Legacy

LeBron James broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar‘s all-time scoring record in February 2023 and became the first NBA player to reach 40,000 career points in March 2024. He has won four NBA championships, four Finals MVP awards, and four regular season MVP awards. In 2016, the city of Akron renamed a portion of Main Street to King James Way. His LeBron James Family Foundation opened the I Promise School in Akron in 2018, offering full-ride scholarships to the University of Akron. He has been named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People and is remembered as one of basketball’s greatest talents.

Senior Copy Editor & Editorial Fact Reviewer

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
