BIOGRAPHY

Weird Al Yankovic — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

At age seven, Alfred Matthew Yankovic began playing the accordion after a salesman visited his home. His parents, Nick of Yugoslavian descent and Mary of Italian and English ancestry, chose the instrument because of polka king Frankie Yankovic. Born on October 23, 1959, in Downey, California, and raised in Lynwood, he sent homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento radio show as a teen. The show broadcast his early work. He graduated as valedictorian from Lynwood High School at age 16 and studied architecture at California Polytechnic State University, where he earned the nickname Weird Al and recorded his first published parody, My Bologna.

Career

In 1984, Yankovic released Eat It, a parody of Michael Jackson’s Beat It, which reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy nomination. His 1985 album Dare to Be Stupid included the long-delayed parody Yoda. Yankovic’s 1989 cult film UHF showcased his comedy, though it was a box-office disappointment. He continued with hit parodies like Smells Like Nirvana 1992, Amish Paradise 1996, and White & Nerdy 2006, the latter becoming his highest-charting single at #9. In 2014, Mandatory Fun became his first #1 album and the first comedy album to top the chart since 1963. Yankovic also released the box set Squeeze Box in 2017.

Personal life

Yankovic married Suzanne Krajewski on February 10, 2001, and their daughter Nina was born on February 11, 2003. His parents, Nick and Mary Yankovic, died on April 9, 2004, from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a closed fireplace flue. Yankovic has been open about the tragedy but continues to maintain a busy tour schedule. He remains close friends with his band members, who have been with him since 1982.

Legacy

Weird Al Yankovic received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on August 27, 2018, at 6914 Hollywood Boulevard. He has won four Grammy Awards: for Best Concept Music Video, Best Comedy Album multiple times, and Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package. Yankovic set a U.S. record on Spotify for having the most tracks from one album in the viral top 10 at one time with Mandatory Fun. He is one of only four artists to have Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades, alongside Michael Jackson, Madonna, and U2. Yankovic’s parodies have become a cultural staple, and he is remembered as the king of musical parody.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
