Apollo 11 command module pilot Mike Collins stayed in lunar orbit on July 20, 1969, while his crewmates became the first men on the moon. He later served as the first director of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. He also flew the Gemini 10 mission in 1966 with John Young. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.
