Early life

Alicia Keys began piano lessons at age seven, at her mother’s insistence, and quickly proved to be a prodigy. She was born Alicia Augello Cook on January 25, 1981, in Manhattan, New York City, and raised by her mother in Hell’s Kitchen after her father left when she was two. Her mother, Teresa Augello, is of Italian and English/Irish/Scottish descent; her father, Craig Cook, is African-American. She attended the Professional Performing Arts School, graduating as valedictorian at age 16.

Career

In 1998, Keys signed with Arista Records but soon moved to J Records under Clive Davis. In 2001, she released her debut album Songs in A Minor, which sold 6 million copies and earned her five Grammy Awards including Best New Artist and Song of the Year for Fallin’. She followed with The Diary of Alicia Keys in 2003, winning four more Grammys. She has released multiple albums, collaborated with artists such as Usher and John Mayer, and performed with David Bowie in 2006. She also wrote and produced Christina Aguilera’s Impossible from the album Stripped.

Personal life

Alicia Keys married Swizz Beatz on July 31, 2010, in a small ceremony on the French island of Corsica after a 14-month courtship. They have two sons: Egypt Daoud Dean born October 14, 2010 and Genesis Ali Dean born December 27, 2014. She has been friends with Beyoncé since age 13 and with Usher since age 14. She gave birth to Egypt five months before completing a tour in 2010.

Legacy

Alicia Keys has won 15 Grammy Awards, including a record five in a single year, tying with Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill. Time magazine named her one of its 100 Most Influential People in 2017.
