André Rieu — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

André Rieu was born in Maastricht in 1949 into a musical family; his father led the Leipzig Opera. He began violin lessons in school and studied at the Maastricht Academy of Music, the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, and the Royal Conservatory of Liège, passing his final examination with distinction in 1977. He discovered a love for three-quarter time while studying, inspired by Johann Strauss and Franz Lehár.

Career

The Johann Strauss Orchestra was formed by André Rieu in 1994, named after the master of the waltz. His first studio album Strauß & Co followed in 1994, and Wiener Melange in 1995 became his breakthrough. He toured internationally with the 44-member orchestra and became a regular guest on television music programs. 1998 brought the Golden Tuning Fork award and the album Romantic Moments. He founded his own record company and studio; the organization grew to several hundred employees. 2001 saw the release of Music to Dream, and in 2003 he won another Golden Tuning Fork. Performances worldwide included his castle De Torentjet in Maastricht.

Personal life

André Rieu has been married to Marjorie Rieu née Kochmann since 1975; they have two sons, Marc born November 1, 1978 and Pierre. The family lives near Maastricht, where Rieu owns the castle De Torentjet. In 2005, a television home story featuring his life was created with presenter Florian Silbereisen.

Legacy

André Rieu has been knighted in the Order of the Netherlands Lion for his contributions to music. He has received the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France, the Charlemagne Medal for European Media, and multiple Golden Tuning Forks.
