Early life
André Rieu was born in Maastricht in 1949 into a musical family; his father led the Leipzig Opera. He began violin lessons in school and studied at the Maastricht Academy of Music, the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, and the Royal Conservatory of Liège, passing his final examination with distinction in 1977. He discovered a love for three-quarter time while studying, inspired by Johann Strauss and Franz Lehár.
