BIOGRAPHY

Jared Leto — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

December 26, 1971, marked Jared Leto’s birth in Bossier City, Louisiana, to Constance Metrejon and Anthony Bryant. His childhood involved frequent moves across the United States, living in states like Wyoming, Virginia, and Colorado. At age 12, he moved to Haiti with his mother, who was working with a medical charity. His family later settled in the Washington, D.C. area, where he attended several schools including Flint Hill School and McLean High School. Leto initially studied painting at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia before switching to film and video at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Career

Leto moved to Los Angeles in 1992 to pursue music. His acting break came with the TV series My So-Called Life 1994–1995, playing Jordan Catalano. He made his film debut in How to Make an American Quilt 1995. In 1998, he founded Thirty Seconds to Mars with his brother Shannon, and also appeared in The Thin Red Line 1998 and Urban Legend 1998 — the latter a commercial success. He gained critical attention for roles in Fight Club 1999, Girl, Interrupted 1999, and Requiem for a Dream 2000, where he lost 28 pounds to play a heroin addict. He continued with roles in Panic Room 2002, Alexander 2004, and Lord of War 2005. After a period focusing on his band, he returned to acting with Mr. Nobody 2009. His directorial debut was the documentary Artifact 2012. In 2013, Leto played Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, a role that earned him an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award. He played the Joker in Suicide Squad 2016 and later appeared in Blade Runner 2049 2017.

Personal life

Leto was engaged to actress Cameron Diaz from 2000 to 2002. He has never been married and stated in a 2017 interview that he does not want children because his busy schedule would not allow him to be present enough. He has a close relationship with his mother, Constance, and his brother Shannon, who is also in his band. Leto owned two pet wolves named Judas and Sky, which have since died. He purchased a former Air Force compound in Los Angeles, known as the Mars Lab, as his home and recording studio.

Legacy

Leto’s performance in Dallas Buyers Club earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2014, making him one of the few actors to win an Oscar for a transgender role. He is the third actor to win an Oscar and play the Joker in live-action, joining Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. His band Thirty Seconds to Mars holds a Guinness World Record for the longest consecutive concert tour, with over 300 shows in two years. Leto’s method acting and extreme physical transformations distinguish him in Hollywood, and he remains active in film and music.

She covers everyone from debut musicians to Hall of Fame athletes to novelists most people have never heard of. She finds something worth reading in all of them. Her drafts tend to come in already clean, which her editor appreciates. She says good writing is just good thinking written down. Hard to argue with that.
