Early life
Born on June 19, 1945 in Rangoon, Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi was the daughter of independence leader General Aung San, who was assassinated in 1947 when she was two years old. Her mother, Khin Kyi, served as Burma’s ambassador to India. Suu Kyi attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Rangoon, then studied at the University of Delhi and Lady Shri Ram College for Women in India. She earned a degree in philosophy, politics and economics from St Hugh’s College, Oxford, and also studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
