Who is Al Gore?

BIOGRAPHY

Al Gore — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Senator Albert Gore Sr. and Pauline LaFon Gore welcomed their son Al on March 31, 1948, in Washington, D.C. He attended St. Albans School before enrolling at Harvard College, rooming with Tommy Lee Jones and Erich Segal. After graduating with honors in 1969, he served in the U.S. Army as a journalist in Vietnam for five months. He later studied at Vanderbilt University Divinity School and Vanderbilt Law School but left before completing degrees to run for Congress.

Career

Voters elected Al Gore to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976; he served four terms. Winning a Senate seat in 1984, he secured re-election in 1990. On January 20, 1993, he was inaugurated as the 45th Vice President, serving eight years. His 2000 presidential bid ended in a controversial loss despite winning the popular vote by over 500,000 votes; the Supreme Court’s Bush v. Gore decision halted Florida recounts. After leaving office in 2001, Gore focused on climate change. His documentary An Inconvenient Truth won two Oscars in 2006, and in 2007 he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with the IPCC. He founded The Climate Reality Project and served on Apple Inc.’s board.

Personal life

Al Gore has been married to Tipper Gore since May 19, 1970. They have four children: Karenna, Kristin, Sarah, and Al Gore III. His sister Nancy Gore Hunger died of lung cancer in 1984. Gore is fluent in Spanish and drives only hybrid vehicles. He worked as an investigative reporter for The Tennessean before entering politics. His Harvard roommates included actor Tommy Lee Jones and author Erich Segal.

Legacy

Through his documentary An Inconvenient Truth and his 2007 Nobel Peace Prize win, Al Gore raised global awareness about climate change. His work inspired a generation of environmental activists and led to initiatives like The Climate Reality Project. As a congressman, he helped develop the Internet, earning the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award. The 2000 presidential election, despite his loss, highlighted Electoral College issues through his popular vote victory and the legal battle. Gore remains a leading voice on climate policy and clean energy, a role he held since his 2007 Nobel win.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
