Who was Colin Powell?

BIOGRAPHY

Colin Powell — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Jamaican immigrants Maud and Luther Powell raised their son Colin in the South Bronx after his birth in Harlem on April 5, 1937. He graduated from Morris High School in 1954, then attended City College of New York. There he joined the ROTC and earned a B.S. in geology in 1958. His parents’ work ethic and his own discipline drove him toward a military career.

Career

Powell served two tours in Vietnam, earning the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He moved up in the Army, serving as senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in the Reagan administration. In 1987, Reagan appointed him National Security Advisor, and in 1989 he became Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the Department of Defense. He oversaw the U.S. military during the Gulf War. In 2001, President George W. Bush named him Secretary of State, making him the first African-American to hold the post. He served until 2005, but his reputation suffered after his 2003 UN speech on Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction, which later proved false.

Personal life

Powell married Alma Johnson on August 25, 1962. They had three children: Michael, Linda, and Anne. He enjoyed restoring old cars. He was related to musician Pete Wentz and actress Kerry Washington through his mother’s side. He never ran for elected office despite pressure from Republicans, though he received three electoral votes in the 2016 presidential election from faithless electors.

Legacy

Powell broke racial barriers as the first African-American Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, but the Iraq WMD claims damaged his credibility. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Congressional Gold Medal, and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. City College of New York named the Colin L. Powell Center for Leadership and Service after him. His Gulf War military leadership and the Powell Doctrine remain central to his legacy.
