Who is Danny Elfman?

BIOGRAPHY

Danny Elfman — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

On May 29, 1953, Danny Elfman was born in Los Angeles, California to parents Blossom and Milton Elfman. His older brother Richard Elfman later directed the film Forbidden Zone 1980. Elfman attended University High School. After graduating, he traveled to Paris and learned fire breathing as a street performer. In the early 1970s, he and Richard formed the Mystic Knights of Oingo-Boingo, a musical troupe created for Richard’s directorial debut Forbidden Zone 1980, which later evolved into the rock band Oingo Boingo.

Career

Elfman’s film scoring career began with his first orchestral score for Pee-wee’s Big Adventure 1985, directed by Tim Burton. This partnership continued with Batman 1989, a huge success that made Elfman a top Hollywood composer. He later scored Batman Returns 1992, Edward Scissorhands 1990, and The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993, where he also sang as Jack Skellington. Beyond Burton, Elfman composed for Peter Jackson’s The Frighteners 1996 and created themes for Men in Black 1997, Spider-Man 2002, and Spider-Man 2 2004. He did not return for Spider-Man 3 2007 due to creative differences, instead scoring Charlotte’s Web 2006. He also performed all Oompa Loompa vocals for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 2005.

Personal life

Elfman’s first marriage to Geri Eisenmenger produced two daughters: Lola born 1979 and Mali born 1984. In November 2003, he married actress Bridget Fonda, and they have a son, Oliver Elfman born 2005. Through Fonda, Elfman is the son-in-law of Peter Fonda and Susan Brewer. His brother Richard is a director. Elfman is the uncle of actor Bodhi Elfman and, by marriage, of actress Jenna Elfman. His mother Clare is a children’s author, and his father Milton was a school teacher who retired early due to hearing loss.

Legacy

Elfman’s orchestral scores, known for their blend of whimsical and dark tones, have influenced film scoring. He won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition and multiple Primetime Emmy Awards, including for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music. In 2008, the International Film Music Critics Association named him Film Composer of the Year. His scores for Batman 1989 and Edward Scissorhands 1990 were nominated for AFI’s 100 Years of Film Scores. Disney awarded him Disney Legends status. Elfman’s work continues to influence film composers.
