David Baddiel — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

David Lionel Baddiel was born on 28 May 1964 in Troy, New York, to British parents Colin Brian Baddiel, a research chemist, and Sarah Fabian. His father was from Swansea, Wales, of Russian Jewish and Polish Jewish descent; his mother was born in Nazi Germany to a Jewish family and left for England as an infant. The family returned to England when he was four months old, and he grew up in England. He was educated at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in Hertfordshire, then at King’s College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a double-first in English Literature, and later at University College London.

Career

Baddiel first gained national attention as part of the comedy duo Newman and Baddiel with Rob Newman. They performed at the Edinburgh Festival and had a successful BBC television show, The Mary Whitehouse Experience. In 2001, he wrote, produced, and starred in the film Baddiel’s Syndrome. He has been a regular panelist on shows such as Have I Got News for You, 8 Out of 10 Cats, and Taskmaster, with his first appearance on Taskmaster in 2015. In 2022, he wrote and produced the film Romeo & Duet.

Personal life

Baddiel has one sibling, brother Ivor Baddiel. His relationship with his father is close but sometimes complicated — his father has a habit of swearing that embarrasses him on television. Baddiel is a fan of the bands Genesis and Keane, plays both guitar and piano, and introduced Genesis at their Turn It On Again reunion tour press conference in 2006. He has a fear of frogs and auditioned for the part of Rimmer in Red Dwarf in 1988.

Legacy

Baddiel was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature for his writing. His comedy partnership with Rob Newman, known as Newman and Baddiel, was a defining act of 1990s British comedy.
