Early life

Steve Harvey was born on January 17, 1957 in Welch, West Virginia, the son of a coal miner Jesse Harvey and a Sunday school teacher Eloise Harvey. He grew up in a working-class household and attended Glenville High School before enrolling at West Virginia University and later Kent State University. He dropped out of college and worked as an insurance salesman before pursuing comedy at age 28.

Career

Steve Harvey started his stand-up comedy career in the early 1980s, performing at clubs and eventually hosting Showtime at the Apollo. The Kings of Comedy Tour and the 2000 film The Original Kings of Comedy brought him a wider audience. From 1996 to 2002, he starred in The Steve Harvey Show on The WB. In 2010, he became the host of Family Feud, revitalizing the show with his humor. He also hosts Celebrity Family Feud and the Miss Universe competition. In 2009, he published the bestselling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. He founded Steve Harvey Global in 2017, which includes his production company East 112 and an African version of Family Feud.

Personal life

Steve Harvey has been married three times: to Marcia Whitman from 1981 to 1994, to Mary Lee Shackelford from 1996 to 2005, and to Marjorie Harvey since 2007. Each of his wives’ names begins with Mar. He has four biological children: twin daughters Brandi and Karli born 1982 with Marcia, son Broderick Jr. born 1991 with Marcia, and son Wynton born 1997 with Mary. He is stepfather to Marjorie’s daughter Lori Harvey. In 2017, his ex-wife Mary Lee Vaughn filed a $60 million lawsuit alleging mental suffering during their marriage.

Legacy

Steve Harvey received the 2,497th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on October 4, 2013. He has won seven Daytime Emmy Awards, including for Outstanding Game Show Host for Family Feud, and 14 NAACP Image Awards. His comedic timing and hosting style drew a new audience to game shows, especially Family Feud, which he has hosted since 2010. Through the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation, he supports youth education. His legacy includes his work as a comedian, host of Family Feud, and author of relationship advice books.
