Steve Harvey was born on January 17, 1957 in Welch, West Virginia, the son of a coal miner Jesse Harvey and a Sunday school teacher Eloise Harvey. He grew up in a working-class household and attended Glenville High School before enrolling at West Virginia University and later Kent State University. He dropped out of college and worked as an insurance salesman before pursuing comedy at age 28.
Steve Harvey started his stand-up comedy career in the early 1980s, performing at clubs and eventually hosting Showtime at the Apollo. The Kings of Comedy Tour and the 2000 film The Original Kings of Comedy brought him a wider audience. From 1996 to 2002, he starred in The Steve Harvey Show on The WB.
