Gregor Gysi.

Gregor Gysi was born on 16 January 1948 in Berlin, Germany, to Irene Gysi and Klaus Gysi. He grew up with his sister Gabriele and attended the Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium. He later studied law at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His family connections included his uncle Gottfried Lessing, who was the ex-husband of English Nobel laureate Doris Lessing.

Gysi began his public life as a child actor, appearing in Italian films such as La grande strada azzurra 1957 and Il medico e lo stregone 1957, as well as the Soviet film Flagi na bashnyakh 1958. After working as a lawyer starting in 1971, he entered politics. In 1989, during the peaceful revolution in East Germany, Gysi became the chairman of the newly founded Party of Democratic Socialism PDS, which succeeded the ruling communist SED. He served as a member of the German Parliament from 1990 to 2001 and again since 2005. From 2001 to 2002, he was Berlin’s Senator for Economics, Labor and Women’s Issues.

Gysi has been married to Andrea Lederer since 1996, and they have one child. He has a sister named Gabriele. In 2004, he survived a heart attack and brain surgery, after which he returned to politics. His uncle Gottfried Lessing was married to Nobel Prize-winning author Doris Lessing.

Gregor Gysi helped lead East Germany’s transition from communist rule to democracy. He helped transform the former state party SED into the democratic leftist PDS, which he chaired from 1989 to 2000. His awards include the Orden wider den tierischen Ernst and the Golden Hen. He remains active in German politics and is known for his oratory skills and legal expertise.
