Who is Bill Clinton?

BIOGRAPHY

Bill Clinton — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Three months before Bill Clinton was born, his father died in a car accident. He was born William Jefferson Blythe III on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas. His mother Virginia later married Roger Clinton, an abusive alcoholic. Clinton legally changed his surname to Clinton at age 15 to match his half-brother.

He attended Hot Springs High School, where he excelled academically and played saxophone in a jazz band. In 1963, as part of a boys’ nation delegation, he met President John F. Kennedy at the White House, which solidified his political ambitions. He went on to study international relations at Georgetown University, then earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, and finally a law degree from Yale.

Career

Clinton began his political career as a staffer for Senator J. William Fulbright. In 1974 he ran for the House of Representatives but lost. He was elected Arkansas Attorney General in 1976 and became governor in 1978 at age 32, the youngest in the nation. After losing a re-election bid in 1980, he won back the governorship in 1982 and served until 1992, focusing on economic and education reform.

In 1992 he defeated incumbent George H.W. Bush to become the 42nd president. His first term included the North American Free Trade Agreement 1993 and the 1994 Crime Bill. He won re-election in 1996 against Bob Dole. His second term was dominated by the Monica Lewinsky scandal, leading to his impeachment by the House in December 1998; he was acquitted by the Senate in February 1999.

After leaving office in 2001, Clinton became a speaker and author, publishing his memoir My Life in 2004. He founded the Clinton Foundation and launched the Clinton Global Initiative in 2005, focusing on global health, poverty, and climate change.

Personal life

Bill Clinton married Hillary Rodham in 1975; they met at Yale Law School. Their daughter Chelsea was born in 1980. Clinton publicly acknowledged an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky in 1998, which triggered impeachment proceedings. He also admitted to a 12-year affair with Gennifer Flowers from 1980 to 1992.

In 2004 he underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery, and in 2005 he had surgery for a collapsed lung. He has since adopted a vegan diet. His mother Virginia died in 1994; his half-brother Roger was pardoned by Clinton in 2001.

Legacy

Bill Clinton presided over one of the longest economic expansions in US history and achieved foreign policy milestones such as the Oslo Accords and the Northern Ireland peace process. He received the Charlemagne Prize in 2000 for his work on European integration.

Through the Clinton Foundation, he has focused on fighting poverty and climate change. President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. Despite the Lewinsky scandal, he left office with a 65% approval rating and remains an influential public figure.
