His first book Nondito Noroke, published in 1972, brought him into the limelight as a promising young writer. He followed with Shonkhonil Karagar, another success. Ahmed expanded into science fiction, horror, and supernatural genres, creating characters like Himu, who always wears a yellow punjabi and no sandals, and Misir Ali, the strictly logical person. In 1985 he made his directorial debut on TV with the series Eishob Dinratri, a family drama. His films Aguner Poroshmoni 1994 and Dui Duari 2000 offered a distinct alternative to the mostly violent Bengali cinema of the time.
