On April 8, 1929, Jacques Romain Georges Brel was born in Schaerbeek, Brussels, Belgium. His childhood was marked by boredom and normality, and he eventually worked in his father’s cardboard factory. Dissatisfied with that life, he had been writing songs since his youth and joined the Catholic-humanist youth organization Franche Cordée, where he started acting and singing. This experience fueled his ambition to pursue music, leading to his move to Paris in the early 1950s.

Brel moved to Paris in the early 1950s and after a few years achieved major success. His songs, including Amsterdam, La Valse a Mille Temps, Vesoul, and Au Suivant, became classics. He gained a reputation for intense, theatrical performances. In 1966, at the peak of his popularity, he abruptly quit performing live. He transitioned to film, acting in movies such as Risky Business 1967, Bonnot’s Gang 1968, My Uncle Benjamin 1969, and A Pain in the Ass 1973. In A Pain in the Ass, he played the character François Pignon. He also directed two films. In the 1970s, he pursued sailing, embarking on a yacht to circumnavigate the globe, but he stopped at the Marquesas Islands in 1976 after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 1973.

Brel married Thérèse Miche Michielsen in 1950, and they had three daughters: Chantal, France, and Isabelle. His last mistress was Maddly Bamy, sister of singer Erick Bamy. A heavy smoker, he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1973. He spent his final years in the Marquesas Islands, where he died on October 9, 1978, in Bobigny, France. His body is buried next to the grave of painter Paul Gauguin on Hiva Oa.

Jacques Brel’s songs have been covered by many international artists, including Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, and David Bowie. His work has been translated into many languages. In 2005, he was ranked the Greatest Belgian by viewers of the Walloon TV show Le plus grand Belge. A metro station in Brussels bears his name. He is remembered as a poet of the chanson whose emotionally charged performances and enduring songs continue to resonate worldwide.
